RESUMO

Objective: The Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson's Disease-Cognition (SCOPA-Cog) was developed to screen for cognition in PD. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Korean version of the SCOPA-cog. Methods: We recruited 129 PD patients from 31 clinics with movement disorders in South Korea. The original version of the SCOPA-cognition was translated into Korean using the translation-retranslation method. The test-rest method with an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Cronbach's alpha coefficient were used to assess reliability. The Spearman's Rank correlation analysis with Montreal Cognitive Assessment-Korean version (MOCA-K) and Korean Mini-Mental State Examination (K-MMSE) were used to assess concurrent validity. Results: The Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.797, and the ICC was 0.887. Spearman's rank correlation analysis showed a significant correlation with the K-MMSE and MOCA-K scores (r = 0.546 and r = 0.683, respectively). Conclusions: Our results demonstrate that K-SCOPA-Cog exhibits good reliability and validity.

RESUMO

Although estrogen affects the structure and function of the nervous system and brain and has a number of effects on cognition, its roles in the auditory and vestibular systems remain unclear. The actions of estrogen are mediated predominately through two classical nuclear estrogen receptors, estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1) and estrogen receptor 2 (ESR2). In the current study, we investigated the roles of ESR1 in normal auditory function and balance performance using 3-month-old wild-type (WT) and Esr1 knockout (KO) mice on a CBA/CaJ background, a normal-hearing strain. As expected, body weight of Esr1 KO females was lower than that of Esr1 KO males. Body weight of Esr1 KO females was higher than that of WT females, while there was no difference in body weight between WT and Esr1 KO males. Similarly, head diameter was higher in Esr1 KO vs. WT females. Contrary to our expectations, there were no differences in auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds, ABR waves I-V amplitudes and ABR waves I-V latencies at 8, 16, 32, and 48 kHz, distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) thresholds and amplitudes at 8, 16, and 32 kHz, and rotarod balance performance (latency to fall) between WT and Esr1 KO mice. Furthermore, there were no sex differences in ABRs, DPOAEs, and rotarod balance performance in Esr1 KO mice. Taken together, our findings show that Esr1 deficiency does not affect auditory function or balance performance in normal hearing mice, and suggest that loss of Esr1 is likely compensated by ESR2 or other estrogen receptors to maintain the structure and function of the auditory and vestibular systems under normal physiological conditions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The excessive production and accumulation of melanin in the epidermal skin layer can result in skin hyperpigmentation and darkening. Current technologies for regulating melanin are based on inhibiting melanin biosynthesis. They have low effectiveness and safety issues. AIMS: This study aimed to evaluate the potential role of Pediococcus acidilactici PMC48 as a probiotic strain in medicines and cosmetics for skin treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Meanwhile, our research team has reported that P. acidilactici PMC48 strain isolated from sesame leaf kimchi can directly decompose the already synthesized melanin. It can also inhibit melanin biosynthesis. In the present study, we investigated the skin-whitening effect of this strain by arranging an 8-week clinical trial with 22 participants. PMC48 was applied to each participant's artificially UV-induced tanned skin in the clinical trial. Its whitening effect was investigated based on visual evaluation, skin brightness, and melanin index. RESULTS: PMC48 showed a significant effect on the artificially induced pigmented skin. The color intensity of the tanned skin was decreased by 47.647%, and skin brightness was increased by 8.098% after the treatment period. PMC48 also significantly decreased the melanin index by 11.818%, indicating its tyrosinase inhibition capacity. Also, PMC48 improved skin moisture content level by 20.943%. Additionally, 16S rRNA-based amplicon sequencing analysis showed a distinct increase in Lactobacillaceae in the skin by up to 11.2% at the family level without affecting other skin microbiota. Furthermore, it showed no toxicity in in vitro or in vivo analyses. DISCUSSION: These results indicate that P. acidilactici PMC48 is a promising probiotic strain that can be used to develop medicines and cosmetic products to solve skin-related problems. CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrate that P. acidilactici PMC48 can be a potential probiotic for the cosmetic industry against different skin disorders.

RESUMO

The process of skin aging is currently recognized as a disease, and extracellular vesicles (EVs) are being used to care for it. While various EVs are present in the market, there is a growing need for research on improving skin conditions through microbial and plant-derived EVs. Edelweiss is a medicinal plant and is currently an endangered species. Callus culture is a method used to protect rare medicinal plants, and recently, research on EVs using callus culture has been underway. In this study, the researchers used LED light to increase the productivity of Edelweiss EVs and confirmed that productivity was enhanced by LED exposure. Additionally, improvements in skin anti-aging indicators were observed. Notably, M-LED significantly elevated callus fresh and dry weight, with a DW/FW ratio of 4.11%, indicating enhanced proliferation. Furthermore, M-LED boosted secondary metabolite production, including a 20% increase in total flavonoids and phenolics. The study explores the influence of M-LED on EV production, revealing a 2.6-fold increase in concentration compared to darkness. This effect is consistent across different plant species (Centella asiatica, Panax ginseng), demonstrating the universality of the phenomenon. M-LED-treated EVs exhibit a concentration-dependent inhibition of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, surpassing dark-cultured EVs. Extracellular melanin content analysis reveals M-LED-cultured EVs' efficacy in reducing melanin production. Additionally, the expression of key skin proteins (FLG, AQP3, COL1) is significantly higher in fibroblasts treated with M-LED-cultured EVs. These results are expected to provide valuable insights into research on improving the productivity of plant-derived EVs and enhancing skin treatment using plant-derived EVs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a major symptom of distress among chemotherapy-treated cancer survivors. Although various interventions have been attempted, there is no criterion-standard treatment. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy and safety of auricular acupressure (AA) in improving peripheral neuropathy symptoms in breast cancer patients undergoing taxane-based treatment. METHODS: A total of 51 eligible participants were enrolled and randomly allocated (1:1) to AA or sham control groups. The intervention was performed weekly for 3 weeks using different ear points, depending on the group. The Total Neuropathy Score was used to measure CIPN objectively. The Numerical Rating Scale and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy-20 were used to measure the subjective symptoms of CIPN. Outcomes were compared between groups by time interaction using generalized estimating equations based on the intention-to-treat principle. RESULTS: Only 1 participant dropped out because of nausea and mild fever. The results of generalized estimating equations showed significant improvement in Numerical Rating Scale scores on the hands and feet and total Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy-20 in the experimental group compared with the sham control group (all Ps < .05). Although the experimental group showed a greater reduction in Total Neuropathy Score scores than the sham control group, no significant differences were found. CONCLUSION: Auricular acupressure is an effective and safe nurse-led intervention for managing CIPN symptoms in breast cancer patients. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: The findings help nurses to integrate AA easily and usefully into nursing care, contributing to managing symptoms of CIPN in cancer patients and survivors.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study evaluated whether combination therapy is more effective than monotherapy in elderly patients with metastatic or recurrent gastric cancer (MRGC) as first-line chemotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Elderly (≥ 70 years) chemo-naïve patients with MRGC were allocated to receive either combination therapy (group A: 5-fluorouracil [5-FU]/oxaliplatin, capecitabine/oxaliplatin, capecitabine/cisplatin, or S-1/cisplatin) or monotherapy (group B: 5-FU, capecitabine, or S-1). In group A, starting doses were 80% of standard doses, and they could be escalated to 100% at the discretion of the investigator. Primary endpoint was to confirm superior overall survival (OS) of combination therapy vs. monotherapy. RESULTS: After 111 of the planned 238 patients were randomized, enrollment was terminated due to poor accrual. In the full-analysis population (group A [n=53] and group B [n=51]), median OS of combination therapy vs. monotherapy was 11.5 vs. 7.5 months (hazard ratio [HR], 0.86; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.56 to 1.30; p=0.231). Median progression-free survival (PFS) was 5.6 vs. 3.7 months (HR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.34 to 0.83; p=0.005). In subgroup analyses, patients aged 70-74 years tended to have superior OS with combination therapy (15.9 vs. 7.2 months, p=0.056). Treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs) occurred more frequently in group A vs. group B. However, among severe TRAEs (≥ grade 3), there were no TRAEs with a frequency difference of > 5%. CONCLUSION: Combination therapy was associated with numerically improved OS, although statistically insignificant, and a significant PFS benefit compared with monotherapy. Although combination therapy showed more frequent TRAEs, there was no difference in the frequency of severe TRAEs.

RESUMO

Bulk nanobubbles, measuring less than 200 nm in water, have shown their salient properties in promoting growth in various species of plants and orthodox seeds, and as potential drug-delivery carriers in medicine. Studies of recalcitrant seeds have reported markedly increased germination rates with gibberellin treatment; however, neither the mechanism promoting germination nor the implication for food safety is well elucidated. In our study, recalcitrant wasabi (Eutrema japonicum) seeds treated with bulk oxygen nanobubbles (BONB) containing K+, Na+, and Cl- (BONB-KNaCl) showed significantly accelerated germination. As germination progressed, 99% of K+ ions in the BONB-KNaCl medium were absorbed by the seeds, whereas Ca2+ ions were released. These results suggest that the germination mechanism involves the action of K+ channels for migration of K+ ions down their concentration gradient and Ca2+ pumps for the movement of Ca2+ ions, the first potential discovery in germination promotion in recalcitrant seeds using nutrient solutions with BONB-KNaCl.

RESUMO

Hearing loss is the third most prevalent chronic health condition affecting older adults and age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is the most common form of hearing impairment. Significant sex differences in hearing have been documented in humans and rodents. In general, the results of these studies show that men lose their hearing more rapidly than women. However, the cellular mechanism underlying sex differences in hearing or hearing loss remains largely unknown, and to our knowledge, there is no well-established animal model for studying sex differences in hearing. In the current study, we examined sex differences in body composition, voluntary wheel running activity, balance performance, auditory function, and cochlear histology in young, middle-age, and old CBA/CaJ mice, a model of age-related hearing loss. As expected, body weight of young females was lower than that of males. Similarly, lean mass and total water mass of young, middle-age, and old females were lower than those of males. Young females showed higher voluntary wheel running activity during the dark cycle, an indicator of mobility, physical activity, and balance status, compared to males. Young females also displayed higher auditory brainstem response (ABR) wave I amplitudes at 8 kHz, wave II, III, V amplitudes at 8 and 48 kHz, and wave IV/I and V/I amplitude ratios at 48 kHz compared to males. Collectively, our findings suggest that the CBA/CaJ mouse strain is a useful model to study the cellular mechanisms underlying sex differences in physical activity and hearing.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of geriatric depression has increased worldwide, becoming a major contributor to the burden of health care costs. Geriatric depression is difficult to detect in daily life because of its atypical presentation for each person. Therefore, there is an emerging need to develop personalised mHealth interventions for older adults with depression based on data from an ecological momentary assessment. OBJECTIVE: To develop and evaluate the effect of a nurse-led mHealth intervention of geriatric depression in older adults living alone. DESIGN: A quasi-experimental research design was used, and the study followed the transparent reporting of evaluations with a nonrandomised design statement. SETTING: The nurse-led mHealth intervention was developed and evaluated in a community senior centre in Seoul, Korea. PARTICIPANTS: Sixty-four older adults living alone with depressive symptoms were recruited between 1 October 2018 and 1 October 2019. METHODS: Study participants were randomly assigned to the intervention or control groups by drawing lots. In the intervention group, nurses repeatedly assessed older adults' depressive symptoms using an ecological momentary assessment via a mobile tablet. The intervention consisted of weekly sessions, which included (1) standardised mHealth device training, (2) a nurse-led mHealth programme, and (3) art activities. The control group received care as usual. Intra- and inter-group differences were evaluated using paired t-tests and analysis of covariance was used to assess subjective depression symptoms. A linear mixed-model was used to analyse the relationship between groups and momentary scores over time. RESULTS: The average age of the final sample was 76.2 years (SD = 6.06), 63.6 % (28/44) of whom were female. Compared with the control group (n = 23), the intervention group (n = 21) showed a decreased depression score (t = 4.041, p = .027). There was no statistical difference between the intervention and control groups based on traditional scales and the ecological momentary assessment. However, our data from the ecological momentary assessment captures clear fluctuating patterns across the days during the study, which traditional scales could not measure. CONCLUSIONS: Most of the older adults successfully participated in a nurse-led mHealth intervention that included multiple components of a non-pharmacological approach to address depression. Mental health nurses should perform critical roles to personalise mHealth activities considering the older adult's autonomy and supportive decision-making, specifically when using high-technological intervention. Future research should maximise the methodological and clinical advantage of an ecological momentary assessment of geriatric depression. RESUMO

The Internet of Medical Things is promising for monitoring depression symptoms. Therefore, it is necessary to develop multimodal monitoring systems tailored for elderly individuals with high feasibility and usability for further research and practice. This study comprised two phases: (1) methodological development of the system; and (2) system validation to evaluate its feasibility. We developed a system that includes a smartphone for facial and verbal expressions, a smartwatch for activity and heart rate monitoring, and an ecological momentary assessment application. A sample of 21 older Koreans aged 65 years and more was recruited from a community center. The 4-week data were collected for each participant (n = 19) using self-report questionnaires, wearable devices, and interviews and were analyzed using mixed methods. The depressive group (n = 6) indicated lower user acceptance relative to the nondepressive group (n = 13). Both groups experienced positive emotions, had regular life patterns, increased their self-interest, and stated that a system could disturb their daily activities. However, they were interested in learning new technologies and actively monitored their mental health status. Our multimodal monitoring system shows potential as a feasible and useful measure for acquiring mental health information about geriatric depression.

RESUMO

Application (app)-based interventions using smartphones could provide effective alternatives to traditional treatment programs during and beyond the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. The current quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent comparison group tested the effects of a smartphone app-based metacognitive intervention program with weekly mentoring sessions on the meta-cognitive beliefs, psychotic symptoms, and social functioning of individuals with schizophrenia from community psychosocial rehabilitation centers. The study was conducted with 20 participants with severe psychotic symptoms and low social functioning and 24 participants with relatively light psychotic symptoms and good social functioning as a comparison group. For the experimental group, the app-based intervention was combined with weekly contact mentoring sessions over 10 weeks. The comparison group received only the app-based intervention over 10 weekly sessions. No differences were observed between groups' total scores; however, the experimental group showed a tendency toward improved psychotic symptoms and social functioning over time, unlike the comparison group. These findings provide an empirical basis for managing schizophrenia symptoms with smartphone apps. [Journal of Psychosocial Nursing and Mental Health Services, 61(2), 27-37.].

RESUMO

Mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIB (MPS IIIB) is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disease caused by mutations in the gene that encodes the protein N-acetyl-glucosaminidase (NAGLU). Defective NAGLU activity results in aberrant retention of heparan sulfate within lysosomes leading to progressive central nervous system (CNS) degeneration. Intravenous treatment options are limited by the need to overcome the blood-brain barrier and gain successful entry into the CNS. Additionally, we have demonstrated that AAV8 provides a broader transduction area in the MPS IIIB mouse brain compared with AAV5, 9 or rh10. A triple-capsid mutant (tcm) modification of AAV8 further enhanced GFP reporter expression and distribution. Using the MPS IIIB mouse model, we performed a study using either intracranial six site or intracisterna magna injection of AAVtcm8-codon-optimized (co)-NAGLU using untreated MPS IIIB mice as controls to assess disease correction. Disease correction was evaluated based on enzyme activity, heparan sulfate storage levels, CNS lysosomal signal intensity, coordination, activity level, hearing and survival. Both histologic and enzymatic assessments show that each injection method results in supranormal levels of NAGLU expression in the brain. In this study, we have shown correction of lifespan and auditory deficits, increased CNS NAGLU activity and reduced lysosomal storage levels of heparan sulfate following AAVtcm8-coNAGLU administration and partial correction of NAGLU activity in several peripheral organs in the murine model of MPS IIIB.

RESUMO

We sought to analyze the parameters associated with retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL)-dominant progression or ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL)-dominant progression in patients with open-angle glaucoma. A prospective observational study was conducted. Overall, 58 eyes from 33 patients with open-angle glaucoma were categorized into the following two groups: patients with RNFL- and GCIPL-dominant progression, and the primary outcome was the difference in associated factors between two groups. Higher pre-treatment and mean IOP, greater lamina cribrosa curvature index (LCCI), and younger age were more significantly associated with the RNFL-dominant progression group than the GCIPL-dominant progression group. When adjusting for mean IOP, age, LCCI, and microvascular dropout (MVD), only pre-treatment IOP was significantly associated with the RNFL-dominant progression group. However, when adjusting for pre-treatment IOP, age, LCCI, and MVD, both higher mean IOP and greater LCCI were significantly associated with RNFL-dominant progression. In conclusion, pre-treatment and mean IOP and LCCI were more strongly associated with the RNFL-dominant progression group than the GCIPL-dominant progression group. In contrast, age, peripapillary choroidal microvascular dropout, and systolic and diastolic blood pressures tended to damage the GCIPL predominantly rather than the RNFL. Therefore, our findings suggest the potential to set different treatment targets and identify various treatment methods for each group.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a multidimensional symptom cluster induced by neurotoxic chemotherapy agents among patients with cancer. A well-developed tool for assessing CIPN can help with the early detection and timely management of patients. This study assessed the reliability and validity of the Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy Assessment Tool (CIPNAT) in Korean women with breast cancer who were treated with chemotherapy. METHODS: A psychometric analysis of the Korean version of CIPNAT was conducted with 207 patients with breast cancer who were treated with chemotherapy. Patients were assessed using the CIPNAT and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy-20 (CIPN-20). Analyses of internal consistency reliability, concurrent validity, and construct validity (based on structural and discriminant validity testing) were performed to evaluate the psychometric properties. RESULTS: The Korean version of the CIPNAT had good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.95; the item-total correlation coefficients ranged 0.34-0.76). The CIPNAT and CIPN-20 were moderately correlated (r = .67). Confirmatory factor analyses showed a four-factor structural model with acceptable model fit indices. Discriminant validity was supported by differences between individuals treated with and without taxane-based chemotherapy (p < .001). IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: The Korean version of the CIPNAT was a valid and reliable screening tool for identification of CIPN symptoms and functional interference in Korean women who received chemotherapy for breast cancer. The instrument can be useful for the timely and routine assessment of CIPN symptoms and functional limitations of patients with cancer by oncology nurses.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The study aims to assess cognitive function in women newly diagnosed with non-metastatic thyroid cancer before any treatment and to identify factors associated with cognitive problems. METHODS: Korean women newly diagnosed with thyroid cancer awaiting initial surgical treatment (n = 130) completed neuropsychological tests and self-report questionnaires on symptom distress and psychological distress. Additionally, information on thyroid function was obtained through a medical chart audit. Descriptive statistics and multivariable regression analyses were performed to describe the incidence of cognitive problems and to identify possible predictors of neuropsychological performance. RESULTS: Approximately 95% of women newly diagnosed with thyroid cancer had impaired neuropsychological test scores on one or more tests of attention and cognitive control. Further analyses found that 78% of women met both the Global Deficit Score and the International Cancer and Cognition Task Force criteria for impairment. Finally, regression analyses found that older age, fewer years of education, greater depressed mood, and having a hypothyroid state but not having a comorbid condition, fatigue, sleep problems, symptom burden, or symptom interference were associated with worse neuropsychological test performance in this sample. Additional explorative regression analysis using mean T-scores corrected for age, education, and gender continued to find that hypothyroid state was associated with worse neuropsychological test performance. CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that individuals newly diagnosed with non-metastatic thyroid cancer are vulnerable to cognitive deficits at diagnosis before any treatment. As such, healthcare workers should assess individuals newly diagnosed with thyroid cancer diagnosis awaiting treatment for the disease for cognitive deficits and intervene to reduce symptom distress and optimize function.

RESUMO

While wireless vital sign monitoring is expected to reduce the vital sign measurement time (thus reducing the nursing workload), its impact on the rapid response system is unclear. This study compared the time from vital sign measurement to recording and rapid response system activation between wireless and conventional vital sign monitoring in the general ward, to investigate the impact of wireless vital sign monitoring system on the rapid response system. The study divided 249 patients (age > 18 years; female: 47, male: 202) admitted to the general ward into non-wireless (n = 101) and wireless (n = 148) groups. Intervals from vital sign measurement to recording and from vital sign measurement to rapid response system activation were recorded. Effects of wireless system implementation for vital sign measurement on the nursing workload were surveyed in 30 nurses. The interval from vital sign measurement to recording was significantly shorter in the wireless group than in the non-wireless group (4.3 ± 2.9 vs. 44.7 ± 14.4 min, P < 0.001). The interval from vital sign measurement to rapid response system activation was also significantly lesser in the wireless group than in the non-wireless group (27.5 ± 12.9 vs. 41.8 ± 19.6 min, P = 0.029). The nursing workload related to vital sign measurement significantly decreased from 3 ± 0.87 to 2.4 ± 9.7 (P = 0.021) with wireless system implementation. Wireless vital sign monitoring significantly reduced the time to rapid response system activation by shortening the time required to measure the vital signs. It also significantly reduced the nursing workload.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Efficient anti-fibrotic therapies are required for the treatment of liver cirrhosis. Hydroxymethylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase inhibitors (statins) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors have been reported to have anti-fibrotic effects. Here, we investigated whether combined treatment with a statin and a COX-2 inhibitor has synergistic anti-fibrotic effects. METHODS: The effects of treatment strategies incorporating both simvastatin and a COX-2 inhibitor, NS-398, were investigated using an immortalized human hepatic stellate cell line (LX-2) and a hepatic fibrosis mouse model developed using thioacetamide (TAA) in drinking water. Cellular proliferation was investigated via 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine uptake. Pro- and anti-apoptotic factors were investigated through Western blotting and real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis. RESULTS: The evaluation of the anti-proliferative effects on LX-2 cells showed that the observed effects were more pronounced with combination therapy than with single-drug therapy. Moreover, hepatic fibrosis and collagen deposition decreased significantly in TAA-treated mice in response to the combined treatment strategy. The mechanisms underlying the anti-fibrotic effects of the combination therapy were investigated. The effects of the combination therapy were correlated with increased expression levels of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 signaling molecules, upregulation of the Bax/Bcl-2 signaling pathway, inhibition of the transforming growth factor-ß signaling pathway, and inhibition of tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases 1 and 2. CONCLUSION: The combination of simvastatin and NS-398 resulted in a synergistic anti-fibrotic effect through multiple pathways. These findings offer a theoretical insight into the possible clinical application of this strategy for the treatment of advanced liver diseases with hepatic fibrosis.

Objective: Social support plays a key role in dealing with various challenges accompanying cancer treatment and survivorship. The multidimensional scale of perceived social support (MSPSS) is a valid measurement used globally to assess general support from social interpersonal relations. This study aims to validate the psychometric properties of the Korean version of the MSPSS among Korean women with breast cancer. Methods: Two independent cross-sectional studies collected data from 349 non-metastatic breast cancer survivors. Statistical analyses of confirmatory factor analyses, t-test, and Pearson correlation were performed to test construct validity, including factorial structure, concurrent validity, and known-group comparisons. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were used to evaluate the reliability. Results: Factor analysis confirmed a three-factor construct (i.e., family, friends, and spouse) with good fit indices. Concurrent validity was verified by correlations with social well-being and interpersonal relationships, which are theoretically relevant concepts. Known-group validity was also confirmed by different MSPSS scores according to depression and symptom distress levels. Reliability was supported by good internal consistency and acceptable test-retest correlation coefficients. Conclusions: The findings demonstrate the MSPSS is a valid and reliable measurement to assess the extent to which women with breast cancer perceive social support from spouses, other family members, and friends in Korea. Further studies should verify the psychometric properties of the MSPSS in patients with other cancers beyond breast cancer. Health professionals could administer the MSPSS to evaluate the diverse resources of social support among cancer survivors.

RESUMO

As NGS (next-generation sequencing) technology develops, metagenomics-based microbial ecology, that is, microbiome research, has recently led to the science of fermented food. Based on the above technology, a study was conducted to understand the characteristics of vinegar made from bokbunja, a local crop in Gochang-gun, Korea. Physicochemical characteristics of vinegar, organic acid analysis, microbial community analysis, and electronic tongue analysis were explored while fermenting the vinegar for 70 days under eight fermentation conditions according to the concentration of bokbunja liquid (100% or 50%), type of fermenter (porcelain jar or stainless container), and fermentation environment (natural outdoor conditions or temperature/oxygen controlled). As a result, distinct microbial community patterns were found in the stage of acetic acid fermentation and, accordingly, this fermentation of Gochang vinegar is classified into three categories. Vinegar prepared by the traditional method of outdoor fermentation using jars showed characteristics of "Acetobacter (42.1%)/Lactobacillus (56.9%) fusion fermentation". Under conditions where oxygen and temperature were controlled indoors using jars, characteristics of "Komagataeibacter (90.2%) fermentation" were found. "Lactobacillus (92.2%) fermentation" characteristics were discovered under natural outdoor conditions using stainless steel containers. These fermentation pattern differences were related to taxonomic phylogenetic diversity, which was also considered involved in determining organic acid production and taste. These results will be helpful as a scientific basis for understanding the fermentation characteristics of Gochang vinegar and developing high-value-added traditional vinegar products.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study explored the experiences of pregnant women with depressed mood participating ina group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) program using video communication, based on Beck's cognitive theory. METHODS: The participants were six pregnant women out of 13 women who had participated in an 8-session group CBT program using video communication for women with depressed mood (EdinburghPostnatal Depression score of ≥9). Data were collected from February 20 through March 25, 2021. Indepth individual interviews were conducted through a video conferencing platform at 1 month post-baseline. Thematic analysis was done. RESULTS: Three themes, 10 subthemes, and 38 concepts were derived from experiences of participating inthe 4-week group CBT program (twice a week). The first theme, entitled "continuing realization" hadsubthemes of "a negative and instable self," "a selfish judgment that excludes others," and "a strong beliefin self-control." The second theme, entitled "attempt to change for restoration" had subthemes of "shift torational thinking," "freedom from suppressed beliefs," "tolerance of other people," and "courage for self-expression." The third theme, entitled "departure for a positive life," had subthemes of "emotional healing,""faith in oneself," and "reestablishing the criteria for happiness." CONCLUSION: Pregnant women with depressed mood expressed that continuing realizations and attemptsto change supported their transition toward a positive direction of healing. Thus, they were able to changetheir distorted thinking into rational thinking through CBT using video communication. These findingssupport the use of group CBT using video communication with pregnant women who have depressedmood.
